Over the hill at age 65? Ready for the rocking chair?
Not anymore! People are living longer and making more of their later years. What's the key? Diet and exercise.
The most debilitating influence in one's health as they age is a sedentary lifestyle. The Cutting Edge way makes exercise of some type all but mandatory. Ignore this advice and you are setting yourself up for broken bones, circulation problems, and a host of other physical problems associated with aging.
Exercise can improve a person's mobility, digestive process, and circulation. It also reduces stress. With proper nutrition added to the puzzle, you have the makings of a healthy life."
James Cipriani of Cutting Edge Personal Training recommends the following to help seniors maintain a healthy lifestyle:
Strength Training
Resistance training improves muscle tone as well as bone density, which makes them less susceptible to breakage or injury. Start with 2o minute sessions. Do that three days a week for a month, then gradually up to at least 40 minutes, three days a week. Expect a little soreness for the first week or two. If you experience more than soreness, check with your doctor.
Walking (or other form of cardiovascular activity)
Walking improves elasticity in blood vessels, which makes them less susceptible to formation of aneurysms or rupture. Start with one-third of a mile per day. Do that three days a week for a month, then double the distance, working gradually up to at least one mile a day, three days a week.
Stretching
Everyone should stretch to prevent the bowing or stoop caused by shortening of ligaments. A stoop can inhibit normal breathing.
Eating Right
Make sure you have a properly balanced diet. Take a multi-vitamin/multi-mineral supplement. Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day to help keep the kidneys active, dilute and remove toxins from the body, and replace lost fluids. (Coffee, tea, soft drinks and alcohol do not count!)
