Cutting Edge Personal Training, CT Success Story, Linda Coyle

A Cutting Edge "Client of the Month" Success Story:

From Everyday Fitness Enthusiast to

Extraordinary Role Model

Who: Linda Coyle
Age: 47
Occupation: Vice President of Coyle Modular Homes, Inc.
Goals: "Getting dedicated and focused on a healthy lifestyle to ensure the best quality of life within my power."
Successes: "Being a client of Cutting Edge Personal Training has helped me to attain my ultimate goal of remaining free of Diabetic complications and allowing me to enjoy time with family and friends."

Are you diabetic? Chances are, you either know someone with diabetes, are someone that has to deal with being diabetic presently, or are living a lifestyle that will bring it on in the future.

When you think about exercise, does it scare you? Or do you just not have enough desire or time to make it part of your life? Are you willing to just let the medical and pharmaceutical world control your health and well being for you?

Or, are you like Linda Coyle, who has actually lived with diabetes for over 40 years and refuses to succumb to any pre-conceived physical limitations?  After all, being diabetic for that long can play havoc on anyone's health.  So Linda decided to make exercise a key focus in stopping it. Being that she is very "up" and knowledgeable when it comes to controlling her diabetes, she was well aware of the proven and limitless benefits that exercise would have on her health.  Hence, she made the decision years ago to make exercise a part of her daily routine.

The Road to Growing Stale and the NEW Spark of Motivation

All good things come to an end.  Or at least a halt.  After years of exercising and working with a few other trainers, Linda was in a rut.  She found herself doing the same type of routine each day. In fact, any change to her daily routine made here afraid that it would create havoc on her blood sugar.

But then she joined forces with Cutting Edge Personal Training.  Long gone are the days when a good workout was defined simply by not having interruptions with her blood glucose.  The new definition would call for more challenges.  Hire bars were to be set.  New goals were to be laid out AND achieved.  A higher degree of performance was required.

And in the beginning, this brought on a whole slew of reservations and fears.

So what happened? Well, 4 years later, Lin brings her "A" game each and every session and is commonly heard saying "Is that all you got?!?" Or my ever favorite, "Piece of Cake!"

"With proper training from Jim, I feel positive and believe I can overcome any challenges both in the gym and with my Diabetes.  It has created a sense of motivation within me that keeps me focused and on track which in-turn has now become my daily routine of improving upon myself" says Linda. "Remaining in control of my Diabetes while expanding upon my workouts is a great success for me!  It gives me confidence that I am in control of my disease...it is not in control of me."!

A Typical Day's Training

Linda trains on average four to five days per week with a combination of resistance training, cardiovascular work, and core enhancement. She typically trains with me twice a week...being the 2 most intense workouts of the whole seven days. I change her exercises every four weeks, but the basic layout stays fairly similar.

Here is a typical Lower Body/Core Day during the last 4 week phase of our training:

Squats (2 warm-up sets first)  3 sets x 8-12 reps
supersetted with
Bodyweight Jump Squats  3 sets x 12 reps

A triset of:
Walking Lunges  3 x 8-10 per leg
One-Leg Stability Ball Curls  3 x 12-15 per leg
Blast Strap Torso Extensions  3 x 10-12

Cross Body Mountain Climbers (feet on stability ball)  3 x 8 per side
supersetted with
Shuttle Sprints  3 sets (1 set = 15 seconds of shuttle sprints, 15 seconds of rest, 15 more seconds of shuttle sprints, 15 seconds of rest, 15 more seconds of shuttle sprints)

Success!  And Long-Term Change.

All of Linda's work quickly paid off. While she originally just wanted to mix up her training and stay on top of her health, she soon had much higher aspirations.  I can tell you from years of experience that I can put Linda through workouts that 80% of the population you see in most health clubs wouldn't dare take on.  We have a little running joke: I try to break her in each of our workouts.  And I mean this in the safest, possible way :-)  But she is certainly my little Energizer Bunny.  Whatever I give out...she can take!  And then some!!!

"I find it exciting, rewarding, and fun to continue learning new exercises that I know will benefit me and keep me on course with my goal –“Best Quality of Life – Health!”  states Lin.  "With Jim’s guidance and constant encouragement I know this is an attainable goal.  I will continue to raise the bar and set new goals preparing myself to conquer all new challenges!"

For this and for so many reasons....I am paying homage to Linda Coyle.  A true success story.  A true inspiration. A true joy to work with.  And a true Cutting Edge Personal Training Champion.
