When Setting Your Fitness Goals...BE REALISTIC!
Because It is Too Easy to Set Yourself Up for Failure!

The first time I sit and meet with a client I begin by go over their goals. Most of them will identify someone in the facility that has a body that they admire and tell me “I want to look like that, yesterday.” Well unfortunately that is not how it works.
It is great to have a long term goal, and it is needed. But in order to get there you have to set short term goals along the way.
It has been my experience that if short term goals are not set, the long term goals never get met. When only long term goals are set it seems impossible to be successful at achieving them. This leads to discouragement, doubt, and eventually failure. When short term goals are set and you consistently meet them on a month to month basis, a feeling of success sets in and this becomes your driving force.
These short term goals however need to be realistic as well.
Setting unrealistic goals will lead to disappointment. It is great to be motivated and encouraged to get to your goal, but you need to be aware of what the human body is actually capable of doing in a healthy way.
For example, I will have a client come to me and say I have a cruise in six weeks and I need to lose forty pounds so I can look good in a bikini. I slam on the brakes. Forty pounds in six weeks?!?!? That comes out to almost a pound a day. That is not healthy weight loss.
Healthy weight loss depending on how over weight a person is, ranges anywhere from 1-3 pounds per week.
The more over weight a person is the easier it is to initially drop weight. Setting realistic goals and achieving them is what keeps you motivated. There is no better feeling in the world than trying to drop 9 pounds in a month and getting on that scale and having it happen. That feeling of success is what keeps people coming back, and by continuing to come back, you will reach that long term goal.
So remember in order to reach that long term goal, short term goals need to be set and met along the way to keep you motivated to succeed.
Not only do you need to set these goals but you must constantly remind yourself of them. It is so easy to slip off track especially in this day and age. This generation eats way too much and moves way too little. When you are surrounded by people who do not have the same goals as you, and that are lazy- it is easy to fall into that rut as well. Whether you hang a picture on your refrigerator or leave yourself little notes on your bathroom mirror, make sure you remind yourself of what your goals are each day in order to stay on track.
Every good thing begins with a goal, whether you achieve them or not is a direct response to your ability to remind your self of what these goals are. Find what works for you and stick with it.
Consistency is the key to success.
