My Supplement Plan to Get Lean!
Posted July 29, 2010
Last time we left off, I told you that I would go over the supplements I use. When I choose a supplement company, I look for one that is built on high-quality products backed by science and research. Leave it to of the greatest bodybuilders from a couple of decades ago (Lee Labrada and Rich Gaspari) to have two of the best supplement companies in existence. They care about their reputation. And they know what it means to be a bodybuilder.
I have been focusing on helping drug-free bodybuilders for the better part of the past 7 years and I think I have a good idea of what we want and need. Now, of course you don't have to necessarily use the same supplement companies that I do to benefit from this blog. But I will say that for the past couple of years, they are the nutritional products that I take each time to achieve my muscular development and best conditioning.
Here is a guide to the supplements I use:
Lean Body, Labrada Nutrition's meal replacement
This is my "secret weapon" for getting in all of my scheduled meals everyday. Because of my busy schedule, I am pretty much dependent on this little supplement gem. This convenient meal replacement is the perfect food for building muscle. There is no guesswork here. Lean Body contains everything my body needs to maximize muscle growth. Each serving is 330 calories, 40 grams of protein (combination of fast, medium, and slow absorbing), 24 grams of carbs (with 8 of those grams coming from Labrada's patented fiber), and 8 grams of fats (rich in essential fatty acids!).
I put the most emphasis on protein when constructing my nutrition and supplement program. Protein is the ONLY macronutrient responsible for the rebuilding of muscle tissue. I make it a priority to ingest protein every 2-3 hours during the day as well as immediately post-workout. And as far as quality and taste are concerned, there are very few proteins on the market today that are as good all around as Intrapro and Myofusion. The difference between the two is that Intrapro is a straight up whey protein isolate while Myofusion is a mixture of fast and slow absorbing proteins. I will use Intrapro most often (in combination with the protein in my real food meals and/or before/immediately after my workouts).
CreaLean, Labrada Nutrition's creatine monohydrate
There are many creatine formulas on the market. There are also many different versions of creatine to take: monohydrate, ethyl ester, malate, etc. Creatine monohydrate single handedly saved the supplement industry back in the early to mid-90's. And I (as well as many people) received great results from it. Plus, many companies along with their new "creatine hybrid formulas" still use a good portion of monohydrate in their combination. They wouldn't do so if it was that out-dated. So monohydrate is the version I stick with. It has the greatest bang for the buck...hands down! A high quality Creatine Monohydrate will deliver you a fast-acting, better absorbing creatine to help build muscle quicker without the stomach upset and without a gritty texture.
Anavite, Gaspari Nutrition's multivitamin and mineral formula
I consider taking a multivitamin a necessity for EVERYONE! Unfortunately it isn't that glamorous and, hence, often gets overlooked. This is our "insurance" policy to meet the demands of the hard-training athlete. If you want to perform at your maximum potential, you will need to meet the needs your system has for the vast and complex array of vital nutrients. Something that is almost an impossibility through food alone.
I just started using L-glutamine again. I used to use it religiously when I was competing. Then I started to be more frugal with my purchases and for some reason prioritized glutamine right out of my arsenal. I think my reasoning was that my protein powders were glutamine enhanced. Truth be told, we want to keep our glutamine levels high. It contributes to muscle growth (protein synthesis) and prevents muscle breakdown (anti-proteolytic). Supplementing with L-glutamine spares the breakdown of it from within the muscles and improves nitrogen balance. Our bodies need to have optimal amounts of L-glutamine at all times to build muscle.
Mitotropin, Gaspari's formula to increase thermogenesis and enhance mental focus
Every bodybuilder should understand that elevating your own natural metabolism level is a safe and effective way to start the fat-burning process. I have been writing about Mitotropin for over a year now and it has time and time again been shown to promote significant increases in the fat-burning process. Mitotropin's effects rival that of potent pharmaceutical compounds.
In the next blog post, I will show you how I am refining my workout (you should know by now that I am a big advocate of changing your training every 4 weeks). I will let you in on how I am re-incorporating the I-Bodybuilder program...but with a Jim Cip twist! Check for an in depth post next week.
